How to access notification Settings

To access notification setting there are two possible ways. The first one using Volume Rocker and the second one to go to Settings > Sound & Notifications > Interruptions

What are Interruption Modes

For handling notification sound there are four modes that Android Lollipop use.

  1. All – All notifications make an audible noise.
  2. All (vibrate) – All notifications vibrate but don’t make sound. you can activate this mode by turning the Volume down to zero in All Mode.
  3. Priority – All notifications are silent by default with any exceptions. For example alarms are always and exception. If you want you can configure other exceptions in the Interruption Settings.
  4. None – No notifications make sound, period.

Note: Priority & None can be set indefinitely or for a temporary amount of time. It allows you to setup priority to work at regular time intervals.

Issues

Just because you can recreate the setting from the previous version doesn’t mean that everything is perfect. We still found some issues with a few behaviors in Lollipop’s notifications.

  • These setting only apply to notification sound. This means that apps still can make sound, even if you’re set to None.
  • Visual notifications always appear, they come down and block the top of your current app. This interruption might be problematic when you need access to the top of the app.
  • All visual notifications appear except LEDs. If you activate priority mode it will turn off.
  • If you are playing a game, or music, or doing any other activity that uses the Volume Rocker, you can’t change your notifications setting without stopping what you are doing.
  • “Priority” is the worst name you can find for silent plus exceptions ever and is probably the reason why everyone is confused.

In conclusion the Lollipop settings are nasty and difficult. In the previous Android versions were less configurable but worked in an intuitive manner. Hopefully in the feature versions of Android, Google will make the notification system simple and more clear.
