[Guide] Improve Galaxy Note 4 Perfomance & Fix CPU Overheating

Galaxy Note 4 is a powerful device but when it comes to large apps such as games or even emulators, a 3Ghz processor isn’t enough. Running games like Real Racing 3, XCOM:EW or emulators such as PPSSPP can make the cpu to heat up.

Sometimes it can go up 80°C, and this isn’t a good thing. When phone heats up you will notice performance drops even thought it will automatically downclocked to cool down. In a such situation you can install a custom kernel that will downclock the cpu and gpu before the phone automatically does.

But if you don’t have any idea about kernels and don’t wanna mess with your device than we have a good news. There is another solution for the overheating issue. You know that Note 4 features a screen with a QHD resolution. It’s two times more than full HD and four times more than HD. It’s awesome right! It has a beautiful look and sharpness in daily life.

But when it comes to large games it might not be so good because it pushes the cpu to its limits and this cause the overheating issue. To fix this problem a smart guy has developed a tool called “NOMone Resolution Changer” like his name “NOMone”. The app is available on Play Store and it’s for free.

Warning

This guide is made for people who are familiar with root, adb, making and restoring backups and so on. If you have never tried to root your phone and make customizations than this guide is not for you. However if you follow all the steps carefully you can do it. But remember always make things on your own risk. Here at Dorylabs we shall not held any responsibility for any damage to your phone.

It’s recommended to do a Nandroid backup through recovery or at least a Titanium backup. Better safe than sorry. So even if anything goes wrong you still can restore your current ROM. It won’t be needed to reflash the official firmware.

Note 4 resolution changer

Now if you are thinking why should you sacrifice the the “QHD Resolution” than probably you don’t know anything about this tool. The best thing is that with just a click you can change the resolution of your phone and revert it back anytime.

So if you plan to open a large game than go and switch the resolution before opening the game and when you finish you can revert back, with only just a click. If you plan to use this tool make sure to restore the defaults because the settings stick after a reboot. So if you want to go back to QHD restore the defaults.

The trick when using this app is to set the right screen density and dpi so the screen doesn’t get mixed up.  If you will ever use this app the results will be impressive. If you have a Galaxy Note 2 try running the PPSSPP. It will perform better in the Note 2 than in the Note 4.

If you ever wondering why it happens like this, the reason is that PPSSPP gains much performance and it’s unbelievable. Also to check the improvements you do some benchmark runs.

If you are a person who use a lot of large apps especially games than you should install a Custom Kernel and automate things a bit. You might be thinking that if you reduce the screen resolution you will lose the quality. To be honest there is no difference. Only if you look very closely. Because even a full HD screen is great. If you use the phone as normally you won’t notice any difference.

But despite the all good things this tool has also it own drawbacks. What does this mean? Well… the only thing that can be frustrating is that UI gets messed up. You will notice a bigger status bar, bigger icons and such things. Another thing, this tool doesn’t work with Cyanogenmod ROMs.

But if you are using a stock TouchWiz firmware or another custom ROM than you should give it a try. Simply change the screen resolution before running the app and once you are done revert it back.

There is also another way to change screen resolution but this tool simplify things a loot. If you have USB Debugging you can change screen resolution in Note 4 and increase 3D performance using adb commands.
