If you want to upgrade the existing firmware to a new version where already is a public root exploit, you will need a pre-rooted firmware. To install it on Android you will need a custom recovery. The best one is TWRP recovery but any other will work great as well.

How to create a pre-rooted firmware for Android

Depending on your device, you can generate a pre-rooted firmware at least about 7 minutes.The tools

The tool you are going to use is self-explanatory. You simply need to follow the on-screen instructions. It will create the pre-rooted firmware in the executable directory named ‘flashable.zip‘.

If you don’t include a kernel on the pre-rooted firmware, it’s strongly recommended to flash it after you flash the firmware.

Install the kernel using recovery right away you flashed the firmware. Make sure you’re flashing compatible kernel otherwise you may run into problems.
