Apple products are infamous for their short shelf life, but if you want your laptop for life, click here to learn how to extend your MacBook Pro lifespan.
Roughly 60% of the adult population in the US owns a laptop. They may use it for school, work, or leisurely surfing the Internet.
Though there are many affordable laptop options, you may spring for a MacBook Pro because of the prestige of owning one. Thus you’re going to want that machine to last as long as possible to get the most of your investment.
Luckily, there are a few things you can do to lengthen the MacBook Pro lifespan. Let’s take a look at a few of them here!
How to Increase Macbook Pro Lifespan
1. Invest in a Solid State Drive
There are two basic types of hard drives, the HDD and SSD, or solid-state drive. The main difference is that the SSD doesn’t have any moving parts. This means that any sudden jolts, like dropping it or banging the laptop against something, are less likely to cause damage to the hard drive.
Solid-state drives also transfer data faster, make less noise, and just last longer in general regardless of the abuse it receives.
The only advantage that HDD has is that storage is cheaper. So if you can make room for the SSD in your budget, do it.
2. Don’t Fill Up the Hard Drive
Your laptop needs at least a little bit of free memory to work at full capacity. If you fill your hard drive up to the brim, it won’t have much to work with and your computer will frustratingly slow down.
You don’t have to leave much space, about 5-10% of your hard drive’s capacity should do it.
3. Use Protective Accessories
Laptops are designed to be portable so you can take them with you anywhere. Unfortunately, that opens them up to a bit more abuse. Deck your laptop with a few protective accessories to minimize the chance of damage.
Consider a MacBook screen protector to limit the risk of breaking the screen if you drop or bump the laptop. You can also get a soft case to cushion your laptop when in transit.
4. Take Care of the Power Supply
Laptops automatically take care of their power supply to a certain extent. If you leave it plugged in after it’s fully charged, the laptop won’t continue charging. If it did, it could overheat and explode so manufacturers added this feature to ensure that won’t happen.
However, a power surge or something similar could damage your laptop. Thus, you should always plug your laptop into a surge protector to ensure this doesn’t happen.
5. Turn It Off Occasionally
It’s tempting to use that handy sleep mode all the time. The laptop wakes up much quicker and you can leave everything you’re working on open and ready for immediate use.
But if you do that all the time your laptop never gets a break. It might be a machine, but even machines need time to recharge and reboot occasionally. Turning off your laptop gives it a chance to rest and reset, especially after you’ve been moving a lot of files around.
It’s Easy to Extend Your MacBook Pro Lifespan
The tips we’ve shared here to extend your MacBook Pro lifespan are simple and easy to follow. By doing so you’ll get months or even years more of faithful service out of your electronic companion. Take care of it, and it’ll take care of you!
